Thursday 23 June
D Day for us Brits today as we go to the polls to vote whether to stay in the European Union or wave Auf Wiedersehen and go it alone despite all the hype the Government have been sending out to persuade us to remain.
We leave Camp Romany behind and drive only a few hours today back into France and up towards Strasbourg where we stop off in the Super “U” car park aire at Gertwiller in the province of Alsace. It has been another hot day with temperatures of 36 degrees. We park and wander down into the beautiful village but are sorely disappointed to find that the only bar and restaurant that there is there, unfortunately is closed. ( Don’t they realise we have some seriously hot thirsty people here ! ) There are some wineries and a couple of Gingerbread shops but sadly not a lot else.
On return to “Cis ” we have managed to grab the only bit of shade in the car park and after having lunch in the supermarket ( as there was nowhere else ! ) and having done some shopping, we open all the vents and windows to disperse the heat and then retire to our veranda for cocktails ( get you ! ) and chill for the rest of the day and evening ( me in the shade, and Mrs Frazzle cooking in the Sun ! )
Friday 24 June
We have awakened this morning to find that Mrs Merkel is not a happy lady as the English public have narrowly voted to leave the E.U. although in reality this may take a few years to take place.
Today we moved ever north and passed through our 8th country, Germany ( come on add them up ! France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Italy, San Marino, Vatican City, and Germany ! ) briefly before we arrived at a campsite just on the outskirts of Luxembourg City. This is called Camping Kockelscheuer and is a 15 minute bus ride straight into the city. Unfortunately they have had some really heavy rain previously and we have had to park on the road adjoining our pitch rather than on the very soggy grass pitch otherwise it would have resulted in another what is now internationally renowned as the Firenze Affair ! ( see some people have the common sense to not get you bogged down unnecessarily ) The site is nice with good size pitches and modern shower blocks and amenities. There is a small shop and snack bar and free WIFI throughout and cheap although I don’t know what my final bill will be until we leave.
The weather this afternoon is going to be sunny but tomorrow it is forecast to pour down so we caught the bus into the city which was just a 5 minute walk to the stop. On our arrival we had a good look round but I didn’t take too many photos as we came here a short while ago and I don’t want you to be bored with the same photos. If you have never been it is definitely worth a visit if you get the chance as it is beautiful ( and fuel is the cheapest in Europe ! )
We had a couple of beers outside a couple of restaurants sitting in the warm afternoon sun in the leafy square of the Place D’ Arts right in the centre and finished off with a nice meal at a Mexican restaurant there. We returned to “Cis” around 8.00 where we chilled once more before it was time to float off to the Land of Nod
Saturday 25 June
We are not moving onward today and are just recuperating ready for the final push back towards Blighty on Sunday via Belgium. The weather has taken a turn for the worse so luckily we visited the city yesterday. It gives us the chance to catch up on the blog and do a few chores. That’s about all we plan to do today other than read a bit so look out for the next episode which will be about Gent and Bruges if all goes to plan but maybe after we return to the UK if I can’t get any WIFI.
