Sunny Siena & Soggy Sites !

Sunday 18 June

To begin our new day we returned to the aire at Siena and caught a bus into the centre. Because it was Sunday not many were running but we managed to get one easy enough without a long wait. We arrived at San Dominica Basilica and sauntered through the small ( and tall ) streets until we arrived in the main Il Campo square which is famous for the annual horse racing events . They all have riders from each of the streets and districts around the city and have different coloured flags and even different coloured street lights supporting their riders. We had a good couple of hours wandering around and also saw the stunningly beautiful cathedral there from the outside. ( too tight to pay again ! )

Whilst in Il Campo Square, about a hundred Vespa scooters came along and skirted the edge before moving on. They appeared to come from all over Tuscany. When I was younger ( in the Mods & Rockers era ) Scooters were known as Puff Chariots.

After our brief visit to Siena ( and eating a slice of the worst Pizza we’ve ever tasted ! ) we drove to our overnight stay at a campsite to the east of the city of Firenze ( Florence ), unfortunately through some heavy rain accompanied with thunder and lightning. The site was recommended by my mate Andy.  This is called Il Poggetto and from first view looked very nice and the girl who checked us in was lovely and extremely helpful. Unfortunately it went downhill quickly from here !

Firstly I was told that although they took ACSI card, because ” Cis ” was large we were not able to fit on the sites reserved for ACSI and therefore it would cost me 34 Euros a night plus the obligatory local tax. OK fair enough, I wasn’t particularly happy about it, but I agreed to accept this.

From there we had a guy who showed us to a site close to the entrance and because it was still hammering it down he said there was some pitches on the the other side of the site but we should settle for this one. I was wary of the site as it was quite sloping and looked very wet.

Having pitched on the site, we decided it was too much of a slope and the front wheels had settled rather too well into the grass. I collared the guy again and got him to show me the other pitches in his buggy as I wasn’t happy where we were currently.

After looking at a level but a bit naff although acceptable site I returned to “Cis” and tried to reverse her off the pitch which just resulted in her getting bogged down in the mud. At this stage I realised I would not get off without some help. Luckily I have some Grip Mats which fit under the wheels and help in getting off boggy sites. After about 15 minutes I finally got free from the mud which was most reluctant to let go of my by now slippy, clogged up tyres.

I then drove down to the new level pitch and connected us up with the ‘leccy ( still in the chuffing rain ! ) and went to fetch my by now well mud caked grip mats. On retrieving them I visited the nearest tap which was near the reception to try to clean the mud off. At this stage Il Mussolini returned with his buggy and gave me an earful about why I shouldn’t wash off the mats here because it would clog the grate. Me being the super submissive type ( Oh you know me so well ! ) began to give him a gobfull that the reason why I was washing it off in the first place was because it was his goddam stupid fault that he had put me on a totally unsuitable pitch for the size of my van  ! ( bearing in mind I have already paid twice as much as I needed to  because of this ).
His answer to that was ” you shouldn’t have bought such a big van “. I really bit my tongue at this stage as it has got Naff all to do with him which van I chose to travel in. I then said well if you are not happy with me washing my mats here the take me down to the site I am currently on. He said why ? I said because they are heavy and dirty. He refused as he didn’t like the way I was talking to him. ( at this stage I really wanted to tell him what a ^*#{¥ he was ) I bit my tongue again ( it’s really bleeding by now ! ) and said PLEASE ! Take me to the bottom of the site which he begrudgingly did, where I continued to wash the mats off for another 45 minutes getting continually soaked as I did so ! ( thanks so much for your constant help and attention you dick ! )

Having finally finished off my unnecessary and time consuming chores I was filthy and sweaty and in need of a shower. When I had done so it was now time to chill out in the bar for a couple looking at the nice view overlooking the pool into the lovely Tuscan hills and by now the rain had stopped and there was the odd glimpse of Signore Sunshine ( don’t mention the row of 6 beer taps that only had one available ! )

Now,  having said hello to the family back in the UK by FaceTime ( Fathers Day today ! )  we retired back to “Cis” and had one of the best meals of the holiday beautifully cooked by Nigella Cathcart in the comfort of our own home away from home. (  Scrummy ! ) after that we chilled again for the evening ( although Nigella was a bit grumpy about the much less than warm shower she had to undergo ! )
