Thursday 9 June
Change of plan again today. Having only paid 10 Euros at the aire last night when we thought it would be 15 ( good Yorkshire lad saving head on here ! ) we looked at the weather and distances we had planned and having saved a day already on where we thought we would be, we made the executive decision to go to Venice.
We opted to take the toll motorways to help speed things up and travelled around 200 miles on the motorways which cost us 26.50 Euros which is a lot cheaper than French motorways for which I get charged HGV rates. It also saved a couple of hours and was slightly less stressful than journeying with the infamous Italian Driving Mafia on the non – motorway roads !
We drove to a campsite called Fusina which is across the water from Venice and easily situated to catch the Vaporetto ( Water Taxi ). The site is quite expensive at 33 Euros per night including electricity but has all the facilities such as cracking hot showers, shop, bar, pizzeria and full restaurant. It also has a lovely view of Venice. ( not much through the current rain ! ) To be honest today the weather today here is pretty pants and remained so the rest of the day and night but we have been told that it will be sunny tomorrow when we visit Venice. ( fingers crossed ! )
Having got parked up and got the electricity sorted we had a wander to the bar and shop where amazingly they sold a couple of Belgium beers but most unusually they had four different Wold Top beers which come from North East Yorkshire and is a quite small brewery !. I did find an Italian beer off my list, a Moretti Baffo D’Oro in the shop which I am drinking as I do this blog but is nothing to particularly shout about. ( there are much better Italian beers hopefully to discover, in fact the Red Poretti in the bar was far superior ! )
We finish off the evening by braving the still continuing deluge to visit the pizzeria to sample our first Pizza’s in Italy. I had a four cheese one with pineapple and Jane had a cheese, tomato, Parma ham and rocket. ( in my opinion mine won in the old taste test ! ) after that we came back to our home from home and chilled until bed time
Friday 10 June
Way hay ! The tap has been turned off and they day starts dry but quite cloudy.
We catch the Vaporetto to Venice which took about 20 minutes and gives a lovely view travelling in to the city.
After about an hour the sun was fully out and we whiled away the day through the little alleyways and over the canals around the city. We took in the must sees such as the Rialto Bridge ( presently shrouded in a large hoarding whilst they work on it ), St Marks Square with the Doges Palace, St Marks Basilica ( although we didn’t go in as the queue stretched from the door all the way to Rome ! ), The Bridge of Sighs and of course the most famous of all…. The Hard Rock Cafe !
We opted not to eat in the restaurants fronting St Marks Square as we couldn’t get a mortgage to be able to sit in them. Instead we found a nice small one in a small square near to where we catch our Vaporetto back to Fusina.
Having had a full day in Venice we came back to the site and enjoyed the evening sittings in the most welcome sunshine with a nice glass of wine/ beer and contemplated our next move further south to San Marino.
